天魁天鉞為紫微斗數一對比較純粹的吉星，他們負面意義較少，因此熟記其安星法就十分重要。
天魁天鉞都是按出生年天干安星，我們先看排列口訣︰
甲戊庚牛羊，乙己鼠猴鄉，
丙丁豬雞位，壬癸兔蛇藏，
六辛逢馬虎，魁鉞貴人方。
這代表出生年干為甲戊庚年的話，魁鉞在牛羊宮位，即斗數盤上的丑宮及未宮；乙年或己年出生的話，魁鉞在鼠(子)猴(申)宮；丙年或丁年生人，魁鉞在豬(亥)雞(酉)宮；壬年或癸年生人，魁鉞在兔(卯)蛇(巳)宮；辛年生人，魁鉞在馬(午)虎(寅)宮。除了留意出生年與宮位的配對，還要留意魁鉞的先後次序，例如「甲戊庚牛羊」，先安天魁後安天鉞，所以「牛羊」是指牛(丑宮)先安天魁，後在羊(未宮)安天鉞。
除了按出生年干排的原局魁銊，推算流年時也有按流年天干排的流魁及流銊。因此熟記此安星口訣可以快速查找他們的位置，又因魁銊負面意義較少，得其會照一般也可以說運氣較佳，熟記口訣也較為便利。
以圖象表達的話，如下圖︰
不同人可能有不同的記憶方法，我喜歡將星耀動態變化，想像成一個動畫來幫助記憶。天魁、天鉞就像一個圓頂和一個地基，不入辰戌宮位。圓頂和地基的建造，按天干的順序繪畫，先由中間開始動筆，向戌宮收窄過去，所以甲乙丙年的「圓頂」分別是未申酉宮，「地基」分別是丑子亥宮。丁年再在酉亥宮加一筆。然後又再在中間開始向右畫，這次只畫兩宮，所以戊己年的「圓頂」分別是未申，「地基」是丑子。因為丑未宮是中間，我們再在這裡多畫一筆，所以庚年天魁、天鉞仍在丑未宮。最後繪畫「圓頂」及「地基」的左邊，同樣向辰宮收窄過去，辛壬年分別是午巳宮及寅卯宮。如同丁年一樣，癸年也在「圓頂」和「地基」的末端補一筆。我們發現寅午宮最為特別，只有辛年一年安放天魁、天鉞，還有天鉞一般安在「圓頂」，只有辛年天鉞安在「地基」。
天魁、天鉞都是指有利的環境，可帶來實質利益的機遇，相對來說，天機代表機會和可能性，六合彩的組合比買大細的組合多，機會自然也更多，但機會多不一定好，最重要是把握得到，所以天魁、天鉞有較單純的正面作用。
